A doctorate built around your visa and your career

The PhD in Organizational Leadership is delivered through EduConnect's partnership with Alliant University and designed for working professionals who cannot step away from their careers for three years. It is 60 credits across 18 terms, taught in person in San Diego with classes scheduled in the evenings and on weekends.

What makes it unusual is the structure: two schools teach it together. The School of Management and Leadership brings organizational theory and practice, and the School of Professional Psychology brings the behavioral and cultural science behind why people follow. You study leadership through both lenses at once.

Because the program is Day 1 CPT eligible, you can begin paid U.S. employment in your first term rather than waiting out an academic year, and remain eligible for OPT after graduation. Tuition is paid in small, interest-free installments, and our advisors handle the part students find hardest: documents, deadlines, the I-20, and keeping your F-1 status clean while you work.

How the three years work

Built around a full-time career, not against it

Eighteen terms, in three phases. You take coursework first, move into applied practice and your internship, then finish with the dissertation.

Terms 1–10

Leadership coursework

Roughly two years of organizational theory, leadership styles, and behavioral science, taught jointly by SML and SPP faculty in evening and weekend classes.

Term 11

Internship & proposal

You complete your internship and begin dissertation work at the same time - the point where your CPT employment and your research start feeding each other.

Terms 12–18

Dissertation research

A year and a half devoted to research, ending with your defense before an academic review board. The dissertation is 12 of the program's 60 credits.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to complete the PhD?
The doctorate is a 60-credit program that generally takes three years to complete across 18 terms. Classes meet in the evenings and on weekends so you can hold a full-time role the entire way through.
What should I expect the dissertation process to be like?
The dissertation occupies the final year and a half of your curriculum. Starting in your 11th term you begin dissertation work while completing your internship. From your 12th term through your 18th you focus solely on research, and you finish by presenting your work before an academic review board. The dissertation accounts for 12 of the 60 credits in this program.
Can I really work from my first term?
Yes. The program is Day 1 CPT eligible, so once your CPT is authorized you can take paid, off-campus roles with U.S. employers from the start. The evening and weekend schedule is designed for exactly that, and you remain eligible for OPT after graduation.
How is this PhD different from a DBA?
A DBA is an applied business doctorate aimed at solving practical management problems. This PhD is a research doctorate that studies leadership itself, combining organizational studies from the School of Management and Leadership with the behavioral and cultural perspective of the School of Professional Psychology. Choose the PhD if you want to research, teach, and shape how organizations lead.
Where is the program offered?
The program is offered in person in San Diego, California. Because it is an in-person program with a challenging curriculum, you study alongside colleagues who sharpen your thinking - one of the reasons graduates come out with a leadership philosophy rather than a transcript.
How do I make my tuition payments?
Program costs are divided into small, interest-free installments paid roughly every two weeks. After your down payment and initial registration fee, the remaining balance is split automatically, so you pay manageable amounts while you study and work.
