Best Day 1 CPT Programs for MBA and STEM Students

If you are an F-1 student looking for a graduate program that lets you work from your first term, you have more choices than you did a few years ago. You also face more scrutiny. In August 2026, SEVP sent two broadcast messages telling school officials to tighten how they approve CPT, so the school you pick now matters as much as the program.
This guide compares accredited Day 1 CPT programs for MBA and STEM students based on what decides whether a program works for you in practice. The main questions are how well the schedule fits a full-time job and how well the program will hold up under the new CPT guidance. Career support matters too, since you need a qualifying job to use CPT at all. EduConnect is Alliant University's official international enrollment partner, so we are telling you that up front.
For most MBA and STEM students in 2026, Alliant University's California School of Management and Leadership is the strongest all-around Day 1 CPT option. The university is WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) accredited, and its MBA, MS Data Analytics, MS Information Systems Technology and DBA programs also hold ACBSP business accreditation. Students who enroll through EduConnect get CareerConnect placement support on top of the degree, which most Day 1 CPT schools do not offer.
Within Alliant, the MBA is the best fit for most business roles, and the STEM-designated master's degrees suit data, IT and healthcare analytics jobs. The DBA is the option for students who already hold a master's degree.
What is Day 1 CPT?
Day 1 CPT is an informal name for Curricular Practical Training that starts in the first term of a graduate program. It is possible when practical training is a required part of the program's established curriculum and directly related to your major. Your school's Designated School Official (DSO) authorizes it on your I-20. USCIS is not involved at that stage, which is why the school you choose carries so much weight.
How we compared Day 1 CPT programs
We did not rank schools on tuition alone or on who asks you to show up the least. Those are easy to compare and they tell you very little about whether the program will still work for you in year two. We looked at these criteria instead:
Reliability and accreditation
The school should hold institutional accreditation from an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, and it must be SEVP certified. Under SEVP's August 24, 2026 broadcast message, CPT has to be required for every student in the curriculum, U.S. and international alike. A program that treats CPT as an optional elective is exposed. We gave more weight to schools with real attendance requirements and a DSO office that documents why CPT is integral to each program.
Flexibility
Flexibility means the program fits your life for its full length. We looked at how many start dates a school offers each year, how classes are delivered and how far the campus is from where you work.
Career support
Your CPT job has to relate directly to your major, and many students enroll before they have one lined up. We checked whether the school or its partner helps you find a qualifying placement and prepares you for the employer conversation. Most Day 1 CPT schools leave this entirely to the student.
Program fit for MBA and STEM students
An MBA connects to a wide range of roles. A STEM-designated master's can open the 24-month STEM OPT extension later. Alliant offers both, so you can choose the degree that matches your job instead of the other way around.
The best Day 1 CPT programs for MBA and STEM students in 2026
All five programs below are offered by Alliant University's California School of Management and Leadership. The right one depends on the job you have now and whether you want OPT after you finish.
What every Alliant program includes
- Campuses: Los Angeles and San Diego, California
- Accreditation: WASC institutional accreditation, with ACBSP business accreditation for the MBA, MS Data Analytics, MS Information Systems Technology and DBA
- Format: hybrid, with six 8-week terms a year, in-person sessions on campus each term and the rest of the coursework live on Zoom
- Start dates: January, March, May, July, August and October, so you are never more than about three months from the next term
- Career support: CareerConnect placement support for students who enroll through EduConnect
1. MBA: best overall for working professionals
Best for: students in marketing, operations, hospitality, project management or general management roles.
- Concentrations: Hospitality Management, Information and Technology Management, Marketing and Digital Trends, and Management and Leadership
- Length: 2 years
- Accreditation: ACBSP
- Grant: $6,000
The MBA is the easiest program to match with a CPT job, because most business roles connect to one of its four concentrations. It is also a natural second master's if your first U.S. degree was technical. Because it runs two years, plan your CPT hours early if you want OPT afterward. Keeping full-time CPT under 12 months in total, or using part-time CPT for some terms, protects your OPT eligibility.
2. MS Data Analytics: best for data and analytics roles
Best for: analysts, data engineers and business intelligence professionals.
- STEM designated
- Concentrations: Healthcare Analytics and Informatics
- Length: 12 to 16 months
- Accreditation: ACBSP
- Grant: $5,500
MS Data Analytics is the strongest pick for students whose CPT job is already data-focused. STEM designation means you can pair 12 months of OPT with the 24-month STEM OPT extension after graduation. Because the program is short, full-time CPT for the whole program can reach the 12-month limit, so decide with your DSO whether OPT or full-time work during school matters more to you.
3. MS Information Systems Technology: best for IT and cybersecurity
Best for: IT, systems, cloud and cybersecurity professionals.
- STEM designated
- Concentrations: Cybersecurity and Technology Management
- Length: 12 to 16 months
- Accreditation: ACBSP
- Grant: $5,500
This is the program for technical roles that sit closer to infrastructure and security than to analytics. The Technology Management concentration also suits students moving from hands-on IT work into a lead or manager role. The same CPT and OPT planning applies as with MS Data Analytics.
4. MS Healthcare Analytics: best for healthcare roles
Best for: students with a health background or inclination, working with clinical, claims or health system data.
- STEM designated
- Length: 12 to 16 months
- Grant: $5,500
Healthcare Analytics is the most specialized STEM option, which makes it easy to show a direct link between your coursework and a healthcare data job. As with the other STEM programs, plan your CPT hours around the OPT you want later.
5. DBA: best if you already hold a master's degree
Best for: experienced professionals who want a doctorate and long-term CPT.
- Concentrations: Management, Marketing, Information / Data Science, and Hospitality Management
- Length: typically 3 to 4 years
- Accreditation: ACBSP
- Grant: up to $15,000
- Transfer credit: up to 9 units for Alliant MBA graduates, or up to 12 credits from another accredited master's
The DBA suits students who have already used OPT from a master's and want to keep working on CPT while earning a doctorate. Full-time CPT across a 3 to 4 year program goes past the 12-month limit, so you would not get OPT from the DBA. If you want OPT at the doctoral level, keep full-time CPT under 12 months and use part-time CPT after that.
MBA or STEM: which Day 1 CPT path fits you?
Pick the degree that matches the job you have or want. Your CPT employment has to relate directly to your major, and a DSO will look at your job duties against your program before approving it.
An MBA is the more flexible choice for most working professionals. Roles in marketing, operations, product, project management, hospitality and general management usually connect to an MBA concentration without a stretch. It is also a sensible second master's if your first U.S. degree was technical, because it does not repeat the same field.
A STEM-designated master's makes sense if you work in tech, data, analytics, IT or cybersecurity. STEM designation is what lets you add the 24-month STEM OPT extension to the standard 12 months of OPT after you graduate, for up to 36 months in total.
The CPT and OPT tradeoff you need to plan for
If you use 12 months or more of full-time CPT during a degree program, you lose OPT eligibility for that degree level. Part-time CPT, meaning 20 hours a week or less, does not count toward that limit.
That means you have a choice to make before you enroll, not after.
- If working full time throughout the program is your priority, you can use full-time CPT for the whole program and accept that you will not get OPT from that degree.
- If you want OPT, and STEM OPT on top of it, keep your full-time CPT under 12 months in total or use part-time CPT for part of the program.
OPT eligibility resets at a higher degree level, so a student who uses full-time CPT during a master's can still be eligible for OPT after completing a doctorate such as a DBA. Talk through your CPT plan with your DSO and an immigration attorney before you choose a program length.
Red flags when choosing a Day 1 CPT school
Most Day 1 CPT problems start with the school, not the student. Walk away or ask harder questions if you see any of these.
- CPT is described as optional, elective or "available if you want it." SEVP's August 2026 guidance says an optional elective does not meet the integral and required standard.
- Attendance is vague or described as not really necessary. In 2019, federal agents busted a fake school in Michigan, the University of Farmington, that offered Day 1 CPT with no classes, and its students paid the price!
- The school's accreditor is not recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, or the recruiter cannot tell you who the accreditor is.
- Someone guarantees you an H-1B, a visa approval or an outcome that no school controls.
- Nobody can explain what kind of job qualifies for CPT in the program you are considering.
- The school has paused or changed CPT approvals since August 2026 and did not tell you. Ask the DSO directly whether CPT authorizations are being issued now.
- The program length on your I-20 does not fit your plans for OPT, a later degree or your time in the U.S.

Is Day 1 CPT still allowed after SEVP's August 2026 guidance?
Yes. SEVP's August 2026 broadcast messages did not change the CPT regulations. They tightened how SEVP reads the requirement that CPT be integral to the curriculum, which means schools must show that practical training is required for everyone in the program.
Can I keep OPT if I use Day 1 CPT?
Yes, if you keep full-time CPT under 12 months in total for that degree level. Twelve months or more of full-time CPT ends OPT eligibility for that degree, while part-time CPT of 20 hours a week or less does not count toward the limit.
