F1 Visa Interview Categories and Sample Questions
When international students apply for F1 student visas, they must go through a visa interview process conducted in English. This can feel intimidating, especially for non-English speakers. Interviewers typically ask questions within five main categories for f1 visas:
Study Plans: Your Academic Journey
The interviewer will want to understand why you chose to study in the United States and the specifics of your academic goals. This category allows you to highlight your passion and commitment to your chosen field of study.
- Why are you coming to the U.S.?
- What will you specialize in during your degree?
- Where did you go to school?
- Is it not possible to continue your education in your home country?
Choice of University: Why This Institution?
Questions about your choice of university help the interviewer assess your research and intent behind studying in the U.S. Be prepared to discuss why this university fits your goals.
- How many universities have you been admitted to?
- How many universities rejected your application?
- Have you been to the U.S. before?
- Do you know any professors at your chosen university? What are their names?
Academics: Your Academic Record and Goals
In this section, the interviewer may ask about your academic achievements and how they align with your future goals. This is also where they may ask why you chose the U.S. over other countries.
- What are your test scores (GRE, GMAT, SAT, TOEFL, IELTS)?
- Why not study in Canada, Australia, or the UK?
- What do you know about U.S. universities?
- What was your previous GPA?
Finances: Funding Your Education
Financial stability is an essential part of studying abroad, and your interviewer will want to understand how you plan to fund your education. Be ready to discuss income sources, sponsorships, and scholarships.
- What is your monthly income?
- How do you plan to fund your entire education?
- Will anyone sponsor your education? If so, who?
- Did you receive a scholarship from your university?
Post-Graduation Plans: Your Future After Graduation
Finally, the interviewer will want to know your intentions after completing your degree. This is an opportunity to show your long-term career goals and commitment to returning to your home country, if required.
- What are your plans after graduation?
- Do you have a specific job or career path in mind?
- Will you continue working for your current employer after graduation?
- Are you sure you won’t stay in the U.S.? (While it’s possible to stay in the U.S. through OPT, CPT, or H-1B visas, you may need to provide proof of obligations that will bring you back to your home country.)
